March is National Reading Month!
"When we read books with children, we share other worlds, and even more importantly, we share ourselves.” -Anna Dewdney (Children's Author)
It's the perfect time to celebrate the joy of reading and inspire a love of books in children of all ages. Your family can use this time to reconnect and enjoy favorite books together.
We understand how busy life can get, and as parents, we often find ourselves juggling many responsibilities. However, within the hustle and bustle, it’s important to take a few moments to connect with your child and share the experience of reading together. Even just a few minutes of reading each day can have a profound impact and bring numerous benefits to both you and your child.
Reading helps develop vital early literacy skills. Young children begin to recognize sounds in spoken words, such as rhyming, letter sounds, and the beginnings and endings of words. These are the essential building blocks that pave the way for becoming skilled readers themselves.
Children expand their vocabulary and knowledge by reading. Books provide rich language experiences and expose children to people, places, and situations they may not encounter in their daily lives. Through stories, they meet characters who might be similar to or different from themselves, helping to foster empathy and understanding.
Reading strengthens family bonds and nurtures social-emotional health. It offers a quiet time to snuggle, relax, and share thoughts and feelings. It creates a safe space to discuss important topics such as caring for others, resolving conflicts, and managing emotions.
Make reading a part of your daily routine. Ten minutes of daily reading with your child can strengthen character, build connections, and enhance cognitive development.
